It really seems like I am starting my New Year’s Resolutions early this year. I always wished I had lovely handwriting and I decided to learn and work on improving my writing. The crazy thing is, my kids, really haven’t or won’t be learning much of this skill. When I was in grade school, I could not wait to learn cursive script. It seemed like such a “big kid” thing to do and I always thought it was pretty too.
My older two kids mostly print but I have warned them that they need to use script for an anti-cheating section of the SAT’s. My youngest is still in the early stages of learning to write and is 1-2 years away from learning script. There are some school districts that don’t even bother teaching them at all. The idea of this younger generation not learning or feeling that it is important makes me sad. It feels like an art, a right of passage, is on the verge of being lost.
I am envious of those with beautiful penmanship. I always have been. Penmanship is a skill and skills can be taught and learned. Like anything else, it just takes practice. I just got my youngest’s report card yesterday. Penmanship is no where to be seen on the current first grade report card. I always wanted to get an O (for outstanding) in penmanship but usually got an S, for satisfactory.
With the internet, there is a wealth of knowledge and I am going to learn it. I already love the feeling of pen on paper, especially a good pen with wonderful ink flow. With wonderful writing devices, like my fountain pens, I have all the physical tools to learn and improve my handwriting. Plus, I love writing and many of my stories were originally written out with pen and paper so I have plenty to practice with too, even if its just plotting out or making notes.
The best thing is, so far in my search to improve this skill, all the information has been free! Sure I could buy a book but this is a great way to get started. Maybe down the road I’ll take a night class (in my “free time”) or something but this feels like a great way to start.
I will post a picture of my handwriting later today, once I find something that is a good sample. This way I’ll have a good way to measure my progress.
